Abstract

The paper analyses a work by C. Banfield “Moral basis of a backward society” (1958), in which basing on research of the situation in a small Italian city conclusion is made that prevalence of the “immoral familism”, aiming at maximizing material gain for themselves and their families, hampers social and economic development of community. The second analysis showed that in some cases “failed” society manifests practices of trust and social control.
