Abstract

The article is focused on the problems arising in the course of cooperation of the Baikal region subjects (Irkutsk Oblast, Republic of Buryatia and Zabaikalsky Krai) with Mongolia and China. It also highlights prospects for further development of this cooperation in the topical setting of Russia’s Eastern strategy. The analysis of the sociological data allowed indentifying main obstacles hampering cooperation intensification and its efficiency. They are as follows: shortcomings of Russian boundary legislation, underdevelopment of Russia’s border infrastructure, predominantly trade, economic and raw-materials orientation of cooperation, anxiety of the local population associated with negative impacts of such cooperation, insufficient funding of the internal regional development and social issues of the Baikal region subjects from the Federal center.
