Abstract

The article anticipates publication of fragments of the book “Reading Interest Survey” by Evgeny Khlebtsevich – а leading researcher of the 1920s. The content and main tendencies of theoretical discussions and research practice of the 1920s on the use of methods for studying readership and reading interests are considered. At the same time, the main attention is paid to this kind of research conducted in the Red Army. The biography and performance of Evgeny Khlebtsevich as one of the leaders of the library service of the Red Army, organizer of empirical research in the troops are analyzed in this context. The methodical apparatus, problems and results of the conducted studies, tendencies and factors influencing their curtailment in the early 1930s are discussed. Conclusions are made about the features of development of Soviet sociology in the post-revolutionary period.
