Author of the paper reviews recent “making” of historical sociology in Russia. After summarizing key publications and reminding of the importance of the discipline, author states modest scope of the overall stock of these years. As it was, a basic assigment for smooth developoment of HS was to get a clear understanding of essence and functions of contemporary HS, to introduce its potentialities to sociologists’ audience. However, today there are only few sociologists regularly publishing papers on HS; and these authors tend to delve into incidental topics; even to return back to overcome views. A most urgent issue for Russian historical sociology today is seen, so the author, to learn from Russia’s historical course through recent centuries to understand the essence of Russia’s present as penetrated by its past: «Men make their own history, but they do not make it as they please; they do not make it under self-selected circumstances, but under circumstances existing already, given and transmitted from the past. The tradition of all dead generations weighs like a nightmare on the brains of the living» (К. Маrx). This is the essence of enigmas deciphered by historical sociologists. There are formulated some of such enigmas (or rather proverbial Russian rake) observable in recent (as well as in milennial) events in this country.
