The article presents social and legal characteristics of the convicts serving sentences of imprisonment in correctional colonies in Russia obtained through use of official statistics, as well as the results of survey conducted in March 2014. The study involved nearly 10,500 male convicts serving sentences in correctional colonies of 16 territorial authorities in Russia. The paper offers a “generalized portrait” of convicts, and an accompanying prognosis.
