The article introduces the problem of educational marketization into the Russian sociological discourse, briefly discusses its social history in Russia and abroad, its position and specific features in research agenda, basic ideas and practices in educational policy, macro-social instruments of marketization in education. The article refers to foreign sociological research publications to reveal social mechanisms of educational marketization (transforming education into service, commodity; parents’ right to choose schools; competition in education; rankings among educational establishments and educators). It concludes that introduction of those instruments is not in line with public and state interests in general but favors only several top-ranked universities.
