In recent decades, Russian social practices have noted trends in the growth of negative stereotypes of old age, the displacement of problems and interests of older citizens on the periphery of social life, the substitution of informal social support mechanisms for older people, which updates the need to analyze the situation and problems of older persons age group in Russia and regions, the search for mechanisms to improve their status and the establishment in Russia of a favorable social climate of aging. The aim of this article is to present the results of surveys of residents of the Rostov region in 2012–2017, devoted to assessing the status of the gerontogroup. Data of polls of the Rostov region residents confirm a slow, but steady tendency of decrease in a role of family support and responsibility of family for performance of functions of leaving against the background of growth of hopes for the state nature of the social help, the opinion that obligations for care of elderly have to lie on elderly, on social services, nursing homes gains weight. The tendency of decrease in the economic status of elderly people in the region is noted, the old age and aging are associated with poverty, the optimum level of income of the person “at respectable age” is almost twice less than real. Growth of expectations concerning the level of provision of pensions is noted, however, representatives of a gerontogroup are socially passive, modestly estimate the income as satisfactory or sufficient, would prefer to have work rather and to distance pension borders, than to expect increase in pension. Economic problems, the need for available high-quality free medical care are among traditionally current problems of a gerontogroup; in 2017 the importance of a problem of employment and social service grew.
