The article is based on a study of the senior pupils’ opinions in Tula and the expert survey of teachers, mentors, specialists of the Committees for Youth Policy, representatives of nongovernmental organizations and mass media on the topic of heroism in the modern world, patriotism and patriotic education. The demilitarization of patriotism appears when young people, who consider themselves patriots, are often ready «to love their motherland», but more seldom «to defend it in arms» and even «to work for the good of the country». Among the factors that develop patriotism «the history of ancestors and family» has a strong lead in the Tula students’ ideas. This emphasis on the traditionalist (past-oriented) approach to patriotism in the future may have the effect, on the one hand, of preserving historical experience necessary for national self-identification, but on the other – of problematizing patriotic education of non-Russian Russians and Russians with a more modernized consciousness. The revealed features of the mentality of modern youth make us think about the need to develop patriotism, focused not only on the «glorious past», but also on the successful present and future.
