Paradigms of Social Knowledge and Validation in Architecture

On the basis of conceptual and terminological analysis of texts in architecture and architectural sociology the current trend of considering social knowledge of architects as an object of sociology of architecture is argued to be reasonable. The author’s concept of ‘paradigms of social and architectural knowledge’ as independent platforms that represent and explain structure of the architect’s understanding of the social and as a set of social models is offered. Among them are functionalist, interactionist, consumerist, environmentalist, and phenomenological paradigms. The differences in treating basic notions of “function”, “activity”, “interaction”, “need” in architecture and sociology are stressed. The basic social models, which enter into each of the paradigms, are characterized, incl.: models of man as a dweller and an architect’s client, models of life and its social content, models of architecture as a social product, and as a social practice. Criticism which sociology focuses on the contents of paradigms is given. The concept is used to systematize and describe the approaches to social validation/justification of architectural solutions. The conclusion is made about the prospects of using the concept to solve other research problems in sociology of architecture.
