The paper reveals Johan Arnason contribution to the development of the theory of modernity. A brief description is oofered of his comparative civilizational approach to multiple Modernity, as well as his method for comparing civilizations used in the analysis of East Asian modernity compared to the Soviet (Communist) pattern. The author shows creative potential of the concepts of Arnason for analyzing modernization in Russia.
